DNA sequencing is still too expensive for a playful approach, and the most DIY-friendly version relies on closed source hardware and wetware with serious vendor lock-in. 1970’s Sanger sequencing offers an intriguing alternative. It was neither portable nor user-friendly back then - but what if we rebuild it with today’s low-cost electronics components?
